Within its first three years of being launched, WiDS presented their inaugural Northstar Scholarship to its first two candidates at a special event attended by industry and defence representatives.

Sarah Abrahams and Melanie Rushworth, completing their Masters degrees in Public Policy, each received $1,000 scholarships presented by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier. They are the first recipients of the WiDS Northstar Scholarship. During the luncheon event where General Hillier was the keynote speaker, he had occasion to speak with each of the award winners. He was impressed by their academic success and demonstrations of leadership – and joked about needing to increase his recruitment campaign by two more.

The Northstar Scholarship will be an annual award which WiDS aspires to increase in value through key contributions from defence and security industry within Canada. More information regarding the Northstar Scholarship for Women in Defence is available on their website at

The scholarship, developed by the Executive Team of WiDS (shown in the photo at top), established a Selection Committee that was chaired by LCol Mary Romanow with representatives from the defence industry: Janet Mason (Vice President General Dynamics Canada); Mr. Kevin O’Keefe (Partner, CFN); and Dr. Chris Herdman (Carleton University).
