In July, Jim Palmer joined the senior management team of MANNARINO Systems & Software as the new Director, Business Development. Jim’s vast industry experience will influence continued growth of the Mannarino business, providing safety-critical systems, software and electronic hardware engineering services to the aerospace, defense, space, simulation, rail and power ­generation industries. 
Richard Adam has joined the Board of BMT Group Ltd as a non-executive Director. A leading international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, BMT invests significantly in research – working principally in sectors of defence, energy and environment, marine risk and insurance, logistics, and maritime transport and ports. 

On 28 July 2017, Jean-Michel Billig was appointed as the Naval Group’s Executive Director to work with the Commonwealth of Australia on the Future Submarine Program project to design and build 12 future submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. He will be responsible for working with the Commonwealth of Australia and Lockheed Martin Australia (the combat system integrator) in finalizing all the contractual and industrial provisions that will underpin the success of the program. Meanwhile, the Australian and American teams continue to settle into Cherbourg to commence the future submarine design studies.

During September celebrations for the Netherlands Armed Forces Day, Lieutenant-Colonel Christa Oppers-Beumer welcomed her successor, LCol Ton Linssen, to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands as the new defence attaché in Canada.

20 September – Representatives from international and Canadian militaries, and representatives from a variety of area companies, gave well-respected colleague LCol Christa Oppers-Beumer a wonderful send-off as she and her husband Peer Oppers embark on a well-earned retirement. During the ceremony, she was thanked in person for her dedication and ability connect meaningfully with a wide range of people. Looking back over their four years in Canada, fond memories were shared by numerous attendees and speakers. The US Defence attaché, Colonel Thad Hunkins, was included in the long list of presenters, and also Ms. Frederieke Quispel, Chargé d'Affaires, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

This was a great opportunity for LCol Ton Linssen, the incoming Defence Attaché for the Netherlands in Canada and his wife Angelique Linssen-Schulte, to meet the Ottawa crowd for the first time.

In June, Seaspan ULC promoted Brent Hale to Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Formerly Vice President of Human Resources, Brent implemented initiatives to facilitate rapid growth while improving quality and efficiency. In his new role as CAO, he will continue to be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. 
Stephen Hedger, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense in the US DoD, has joined Rheinmetall Group as Senior Vice President Corporate Development USA. This new position was established to signal a commitment to continued growth in the U.S. defense market for Rheinmetall Group, a leading international defense and automotive company. Hedger will be based at Rheinmetall’s head office in Düsseldorf, Germany.

United Technologies recently announced it will buy aviation solutions giant Rockwell Collins for $30 billion. Under the deal, Rockwell Collins and UTC's aerospace segments will combine to create a new business unit named Collins Aerospace Systems. The deal covers $7 B of Rockwell's debt, and is expected to save more than $500 million by 4th year.

29th Governor General
As Governor General Designate, Julie Payette had her first meeting with Her Majesty the Queen and is to be installed as the 29th governor general of Canada on 2 October 2017 at a ceremony on Parliament Hill.

New EU Ambassador to Canada
Peteris Ustubs (right), the European Union’s newest Ambassador to Canada, presented his letter of credentials to H.E. the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on 12 August 2017 in Quebec City. Ambassador Ustubs begins his four-year mandate as Canada and the EU prepare to implement the landmark Comprehensive and Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA).  

Change of Command
Rear-Admiral Craig Baines (left), the former commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, assumed command of Canada’s East Coast navy from RAdm John Newton (right) in a ceremony on the Halifax naval dockyards on 1 Sept 2017. LGen Steve Bowes and VAdm Ron Lloyd presided at the change of command ceremony. 


Top Marksmen 2017 “carried off”
Pt Johnathan Sobczak, 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, 4th Canadian Division, is carried from the range on the traditional winner’s throne after winning the Queen’s Medal for Regular Force Top Marksman at CAFSAC 2017. Cpl David Ferguson, Nova Scotia Highlanders, 5th Canadian Division, won the Queen’s Medal for Primary Reserve Top Marksman. MCpl Samuel Coquyt, 4th Canadian Ranger Patrol Group, won the Capt Shannon Wills Trophy for being top shot for the Canadian Rangers Open Match. The annual concentration takes place at the Connaught Ranges in Ottawa.
