On 14 May 2019, thyssenkrupp AG finalized the operational merger to jointly carry out the business activities of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and ATLAS ELEKTRONIK under the new name of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Canada Limited. Both companies have long-established signature footprints in Canada.

The company has already begun investing in a major R&D program in Canada. This multi-million-dollar effort for development of the explosives section of the SeaSpider Anti-Torpedo Torpedo will combine cutting-edge technology and decades of experience.

As a result of this R&D program, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Canada will energize the global market of naval defence with a revolutionary underwater rocket motor for SeaSpider that is expected to define a new world standard and support diversity in a key Canadian aerospace capability. This industrial effort will also create and secure long-term, high-value Canadian employment in the naval defence space. The SeaSpider R&D program will, no doubt, prove to be a Canadian success story as a defensive system to protect ships and sailors.

“We are pleased to leverage a broad range of technology transfer expertise built upon a long successful track record of German naval engineering excellence,” confirms Rick Gerbrecht, President and CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Canada.

In 2013, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems’ design of the “Berlin” Class replenishment ships of the German Navy was selected as the basis for the design of the Canadian Joint Support Ship program (JSS). With the recent announcement from the Canadian government to commence build of the JSS, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Canada remains ready to assist in supporting customized design requirements.

With over 100 products and services in the combined portfolio, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Canada will be able to offer unified service and support in ship and submarine platform systems, including a qualified supply chain offering submarine-certified components being sought for VCM.

ATLAS’ service to the RCN includes effective mine and underwater warfare (UWW) modelling and simulation solutions, acoustic post mission analysis system, and HF radios and NVIS antennae group that will soon be entering service in the AOPS platform. The company will be offering its mine countermeasures system solution including a family of autonomous underwater vehicles for Canada’s Remote Minehunting and Disposal System (RMDS) program.

To date, ATLAS ELEKTRONIK has delivered more than 100 mine disposal systems and more than 3500 mine disposal vehicles.
