For more than 70 years, this proudly Canadian company has been leading the way in designing innovative and cost-effective sonar technology solutions.

Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems first began developing and manufacturing systems and equipment for undersea surveillance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) in 1947. This highly specialized field requires unique capabilities in engineering, development, manufacturing, testing, evaluation, and management to develop and deliver technologically advanced underwater battlespace systems, as evidenced by the sonar solutions they provide for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) fleet.

Ultra maintains a strategically important relationship with Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC). Over the years, Ultra and DRDC have collaborated on projects that have placed Canada at the forefront of Anti-Submarine capability. They have also hosted some of the nation’s leading minds in this strategically important sector.

Partnering with Lockheed Martin Canada, BAE Systems, CAE, MDA, and L3 Technologies, Ultra is part of the winning bid for the Canadian Surface Combatant contract, providing the Royal Canadian Navy with a fleet of 15 ships based on the design of the Type 26 frigate, the largest procurement ever undertaken by the Government of Canada. Additionally, Ultra has been appointed as the IPT lead for this program. Ultra has also teamed with General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada, for the Underwater Warfare Suite Upgrade (UWSU) component of the Halifax-class Modernization program.

“Ultra is singularly focused on bringing the highest level of capability to the Canadian Navy, as well as to allied navies to which we export,” says President Bernard Mills. “In doing so, we are fostering a sustained skills base, employment growth, and innovation that will benefit Canada for generations to come.”

The Ultra expertise as a top designer and manufacturer of air-launched acoustic sensor systems (including sonobuoys and other expendables), has been recognized by navies around the world. Ultra delivers its sophisticated sonar systems such as: the Multi-static Active Passive Sonar (MAPS) to the Dutch Navy; Integrated Sonar Suite (ISS) to the Royal Australian Navy; and the Surface Ship Torpedo Defence System to the Royal Navy.
