The International Atomic Energy Agency says Iran plans to begin enriching uranium to 20 per cent purity in contravention of a multinational agreement. That level is well short of the 90 per cent enrichment required for nuclear weapons but the 2015 deal required Iran to keep it below four per cent. Iran began accelerating its program after the U.S. pulled out of the agreement and reimposed sanctions.


A proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump to legally designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups is on hold at the behest of his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. “We thank President Trump for respecting our decisions and for choosing to maintain a policy of good neighbourliness, a policy of cooperation with us,” the Mexican leader says. Trump says he would step up “joint efforts to deal decisively” with the cartels.


On the eve of the NATO Summit in London this week, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for closer ties with Russia. After talks in Paris with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Macron says new talks with the Kremlin are vital to European security and he is pushing for European involvement in U.S.-Russia talks about a replacement for the U.S.-Russia Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty.
