The Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) conducted comprehensive training on 2 Apr in support of its mandate to detect, deter, and defend against all threats to North America’s sovereign airspace. CANR conducted intercept and safe passage operations of two pairs of B-52 Stratofortress bombers returning from long range training flights through Canadian northern and eastern aerospace approaches. CF-18 fighters were scrambled from 3 Wing (Bagotville) and 4 Wing (Cold Lake) to intercept two B-52 Stratofortress bombers each in the northern and eastern extremity of the Canadian Air Defence Identification Zone (CADIZ) respectively. The B-52s were operating as part of Exercise Polar Growl, a separate training event under the command of United States Strategic Command.

On April 4th, the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia (ARSBC) will be sinking the former HMCS Annapolis to make an artificial reef in Halkett Bay Provincial Marine Park on Gambier Island, British Columbia. The ship was purchased from the Federal Government in 2008 with the intent to making this the first artificial reef in the Greater Vancouver area. Leading up to the sinking, Annapolis has been meticulously cleaned of hazardous and pollutant materials and an estimated 250 tons of materials (almost everything but the steel hull and aluminum super structure) has been recycled.

The Royal Canadian Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy collaborated in the interception of more than 5200 kg of cocaine in international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Costa Rica as part of Operation Caribbe in early March. The crew of a coastal freighter began throwing bales of contraband overboard when the USS Gary, patrolling the area with a U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) aboard, approached the vessel. HMCS Whitehorse and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell were called in to join the operation.

The U.S. military has dropped 60,000 copies of a graphic leaflet near the Syrian city of Raqqah depicting potential ISIL recruits being fed into a meat grinder. Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Military Police contingent officially today took over the provision of police services for the next four years for the personnel living in the Multinational Force and Observers camps in the Sinai Peninsula today. Beginning March 17th, the Canadian Armed Forces, the United States Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve are moving more than 70 military vehicles and training equipment approximately 4,000 km from Valcartier, Quebec to Wainwright, Alberta during Exercise MAPLE CARAVAN. This Exercise provides an opportunity to reinforce the Canadian Army’s mission readiness through a joint logistical operation with Americans. It is also a cost-effective way to manage an important equipment movement in support of Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE. Soldiers will hone their skills in transporting large quantities of vehicles by road over a great distance. In a statement on 14 March 2015, DND has confirmed that a Russian aircraft and a Russian intelligence vessel have kept eyes on HMCS Fredericton. On March 5, according to the statement, a confirmed Russian military intelligence vessel trailed Fredericton at a distance of 6 km. Another incident occurred on March 6 when [Russian] aircraft passed within 500 feet overhead of the NATO fleet in the Black Sea. This was the second air interaction during this deployment. Such encounters have not been uncommon, states DND. Last October, during the deployment of HMCS Toronto in the Black Sea, the ship was circled by one Russian surveillance plane and two fighter jets.
