In response to the ongoing concern for homeless veterans, Veterans Emergency Transition Services Canada (VETS Canada) and The Salvation Army Centre of Hope in Halifax, Nova Scotia, are partnering to provide transitional housing.

The first of its kind in Atlantic Canada, this pilot project will provide two short-term accessible housing units to support veterans who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces or the RCMP as they transition to long-term housing solutions. The first Veteran is expected to be placed in one of the units this coming September.

“VETS Canada is excited to be working with The Salvation Army on this project—the potential impact is overwhelming,” says Jim Lowther, VETS Canada Co-Founder/CEO & President. “At VETS Canada, our work is firmly planted in the belief that the men and women who protected our homes should never be without one, which is the foundation of this project.”

Following the Housing First model, this project uses a transformational approach, quickly accommodating individuals with housing and connecting them with community-based supports to secure a long-term housing solution.

“As one of the largest direct providers of social services in Canada, The Salvation Army is thrilled to come alongside VETS Canada to help make transitional housing for Veterans possible,” says Major Vaden Vincent, Executive Director for the Centre of Hope. “With partnerships like this, we are providing much-needed services to vulnerable people in our communities, while giving hope to those who need it most.”

The Salvation Army and VETS Canada will also be partnering to provide a holistic circle of care approach for the Veterans living in these housing units to help support their emotional and spiritual needs as they transition.
